City of Carlisle Amateur Swimming Club - potted history

In 2004 the City of Carlisle Amateur Swimming Club celebrated 60 years of existence under the guise of one name or another. In 1944 a group of swimmers who had been members of the Border City Amateur Swimming Club decided to break away and form their own club, the 'Carlisle Secondary Swimming Club'
This was an allusion to the then modish word used in education circles namely -Secondary Schools - which were supposedly giving a higher standard of education than elementary and other schools. This name lasted many years until some members came to the conclusion that the word Secondary implied that it was second to the other club in the city. A name change then took place and it became Carlisle City Amateur Swimming Club. A few years ago the Border City Club was sadly wound up and a further change to the name of our club took place. This time it was renamed City of Carlisle Amateur Swimming Club.

During these past 60 years many excellent swimmers have brought credit to the club and leaving aside current members probably the best known is Wendy Burrell who swam for England in the Mexico Olympics and many other international events. There have been many other club members who have reached the top but I dare not list them by name in case I miss out and offend someone.
Many years ago the Club forged links with a club in Germany, Flensberg and also with a club in Lincolnshire, Grantham. The result of these links was that exchange visits took place on a regular basis and they were greatly enjoyed by both swimmers and officials who accompanied them.

Several years ago in response to the wishes of many members, the committee took the brave step of purchasing property to make into a Club Headquarters. After months of hard work by a dedicated small band of members walls were knocked down, others rebuilt and really a complete rebuild took place and the Club House was finished. A limited amount of land training equipment was purchased for use in the ground floor room, which is also adaptable for discos, and the upstairs has an area, complete with bar, which can be used for meetings and social events. There is also a self contained one bedroom flat available for let.
In the early days several social events were held and judging by the numbers who attended these were very popular. All sections of our membership joined in. I believe that in my forty years membership of the club there was never a time when a better atmosphere existed within the club and I also believe that in an amateur organisation like ours it is that family type of feeling that is essential to take the club forward.
I hope these few words have answered one or two questions and I look forward to hearing of many more successes in the future.
